CLAY – Two local baseball teams received kudos for their efforts over the summer.
The Clay 10-and-up All-Star baseball team has made it to the World Series and will begin the tournament in Southaven Mississippi this coming weekend. The Cougars will compete against 16 teams in their bracket.
Mayor Charles Webster pointed out at the Clay City Council meeting that both the 10-and-up and the 8-and-up boys won the sportsmanship trophy at the state tournament, and commended them for their representation of Clay.
“That speaks very highly of our kids and the parents of that group there,” Webster said. “They’re really good kids and they have a great group of parents.”
With baseball nearing the end of the season, the council is already looking to football.
Cheerleading and football are in the middle of signups. Cheerleading is already having a record year. More than 33 girls have signed up for cheerleading this year, compared to 13 last year.
The youth football program is seeing a similar turnout to last season, but the number of teams is harder to gauge due to the fact that the league moved from four weight classes to six.
