The Birmingham Police Department released a statement regarding the assault on one of its detectives Friday. The statement said the detective was in stable condition after he was assaulted by at least two suspects when an altercation began during a traffic stop at 9150 Parkway East near Roebuck.
The traffic stop escalated into a physical altercation which left the Detective with injuries requiring medical attention at the scene by rescue squad members and required follow-up treatment at UAB Hospital.
According to the release, the detective stopped a suspicious vehicle and after an exchange of words, one suspect exited his car and a physical altercation began. Following the assault, two men entered the vehicle and drove away.
Officers responded to the scene to assist the detective and saturated the area of the assault location. Officers then located the vehicle, and two suspects. The suspects were transported to police headquarters to be interviewed. The investigating detective will present the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
