PINSON — Pinson Valley seems to have one more tune-up before hitting the meat of its schedule, as the Indians face Woodlawn on Friday night at Birmingham’s historic Lawson Field.
Last season, Pinson Valley (2-0) completed a 48-0 victory of the Colonels as part of back-to-back shutouts early in the year. The Indians scored all 48 of those points in the first half, defeating a Woodlawn team that would lose its final nine games of the season.
Star running back Nick Gibson ran wild for Pinson Valley, scoring four touchdowns and running for over 150 yards. One of those touchdowns was a 65-yard run. Torrey Hendrix has taken that role now, as he has scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) through the first two games of the year.
The Class 6A, Region 6 slate begins for both teams Friday evening. Woodlawn is under the direction of first-year head coach Cornelius Turner, as the Colonels were unable to win a region game last season. Woodlawn knocked off Class 2A opponent Tarrant 36-12 last week.
The Indians knocked off Oneonta 26-7 last week, recovering from a slow start. Oneonta took the ball down the field on the opening drive and scored with a 12-play drive. Pinson Valley got on the board in the second quarter, and scored the final 26 points of the game.
“We made a lot of mistakes tonight,” Glover said after the Oneonta game. “We’ve got to correct those going forward, but I’m proud to get a win.”
The Indians are looking to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2011, and should be able to do so against the Colonels. Look for the Tribe to cruise to a win, as the meat of its schedule comes immediately after, with upcoming games against Gardendale and Clay-Chalkville.
