CENTER POINT — Jefferson County deputies arrested Devon Martez Simmons, 28, of Center Point, for allegedly attempting to steal copper piping from under a home in the 100 block of 20th Ave, NE in Center Point, according to a release.
The homeowner alerted authorities of loud noises coming from near the home, and deputies arrived to an open door leading to a crawl space under the home.
According to the release, the man was in possession of pipe cutters and a tire iron.
Simmons was taken into custody and charged with 2nd-degree burglary, 1st-degree criminal mischief and possession of burglary tools. He allegedly told deputies he had fallen on hard times and was going to steal the copper because he thought the home was vacant, according to the release.
This is not Simmons’ first run in with Jefferson County authorities, however. He was arrested for attempting to steal copper piping from a vacant home in Grayson Valley in March of 2014.
He remains in the Jefferson County jail on $45,000 bond.
Man jailed for Center Point Burglary and a date is set for Trussville’s National Night Out.
