BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department has arrested and charged Melvin Nickerson, 55, of Birmingham, in connection with a homicide investigation. The incident occurred Friday, Oct. 23, in the 10 Block of 4th Avenue South according to a press release from the department.
The victim has been identified as 63-year-old Otis Cook.
Detectives learned the altercation stemmed from the suspect being upset about Cook’s niece playing in his front yard. The suspect reportedly became angry about the child playing in his yard and words were exchanged which led to the suspect allegedly shooting the victim.
A warrant with a $60,000 bond was obtained against the suspect, and he is in the custody of the Jefferson County jail.
