TRUSSVILLE — A bid to demolish the building located at 156/158 Main Street in Trussville has been awarded by the Trussville City Council. The council awarded the bid to Milam and Co. for a total of $79,596 at their last council meeting.
Included in the demolition of the building, better known as the Sticks and Stuff building, is the removal of asbestos and demolition of the structure.
Mayor Gene Melton said there were some hoops to jump through before demolition could begin on the project, such as getting clearance from the Jefferson County Health Department and other red tape in order to remove the asbestos in the building.
The Sticks and Stuff property is owned by the city, after it was purchased for $625,000 earlier this year. The business closed in 2014.
The plan is to demolishe the building and prepare the site for off-street parking, according to a story previously run by The Tribune.
“It’s also a tremendous eyesore,” Melton said of the building in March.
Melton said he and the council felt it was best for the city to purchase the property in order to “prevent somebody else from coming in there and trying to make do with a dilapidated building.”
Demolition has not been scheduled to begin at this time.
