From Trussville Tribune staff reports
TRUSSVILLE –Trussville police received a call from Walmart at 10:01 a.m. on Tuesday reporting that store personnel were pursuing a shoplifting suspect into the parking lot.
The store employee was able to provide a description of the man and his vehicle as a black male driving a Hyundai Santa Fe which had been reported stolen in Birmingham.
When officers arrived, they observed a vehicle matching the description leaving the shopping center parking lot and attempted to pull the suspect over.
“Our officer saw leaving the parking lot, but when the suspect saw our car he took off and turned south on Chalkville Road,” Chief Don Sivley said. “He just made it a short distance to the Service Road intersection where he lost control of the vehicle and hit the median and then struck another vehicle.”
When officers arrived at the wreck scene, the suspect then fled on foot but was apprehended in the Legacy Credit Union parking lot.
The suspect, Shawn Detonie Hinton, 22, of Birmingham, will be charged with second degree theft, receiving stolen property and attempting to elude, all felonies.
Hinton was booked into the Trussville jail. No bond has been set.
In addition to the charges in Trussville, Gardendale has a warrant for Hinton’s arrest for a probation violation on a third degree theft charge. A $1,000 bond has been set in that case.
A female in the car struck by the suspect was injured, and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
