TRUSSVILLE – Hewitt-Trussville had a hard time defending two of Gadsden City’s finest, who led the Titans to a win on Tuesday afternoon in the New Year’s Shootout in Bryant Bank Arena.
Brooke Burns and Haley Troup combined for 44 points to lead Gadsden City to a 59-44 win over the tournament hosts.
The first half was full of runs. Gadsden City started the contest with a 5-0 lead before the Huskies strung together an 8-0 run to end the first quarter with a 15-14 advantage. The Titans overwhelmed their hosts in the second period. They outscored the Huskies 20-5 to claim a 34-22 halftime lead.
Hewitt-Trussville was carried in the first half by 3-pointers. Bailey Berry connected on her first of two first-half triples from the right wing before burying another from the baseline. London Coleman later ended an 8-0 Gadsden City run with her second 3-pointer to cut the Titans’ lead to 22-20 midway through the second quarter.
Berry and Gabby Hill both finished the game with 12 points. Coleman led the team with 17.
After trailing by 18 after the third, the Huskies cut the lead to 10 with 3:20 remaining, but couldn’t get any closer, missing seven of their last eight shots. They finished the tournament 1-2.
