BIRMINGHAM — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday, Devon Rashaad Thomas, 18, of Bessemer, has been arrested and charged with first-degree robbery and attempted murder for his involvement in a shooting in Center Point Sunday night. Thomas was out on bail from a previous shooting complaint and attempted murder charge from December.
Just before 8:30 Sunday night, deputies responded to the 20th block of Haversham Circle in Center Point, and found a 29-year-old victim lying in the apartment parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds. He was then transported to an area hospital, but his injuries were not considered life threatening.
Deputies said the initial investigation indicates the victim was talking to a relative in the parking lot when a man approached them with the intention of robbing them. The family member fired a shot toward the suspect, and he returned fire hitting the victim. The suspect then got into a green Dodge Ram truck with another man and fled the scene.
Detectives went to the hospital to speak to the victim. As they were talking, another person suffering from a gunshot wound was brought in to the hospital and eventually identified as the suspect involved. The victim remains in the hospital, but is expected to recover.
Thomas was treated for a gunshot wound and released from the hospital. Upon release from the hospital he was arrested on the robbery and attempted murder charges and is being held in the Jefferson County jail with bonds totaling $120,000.
No charges are expected to be brought against the victim’s relative.
