CLAY – The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls teams visited Clay-Chalkville on Monday night in non-area play, and the results were split.
In the first game of the night, Hewitt-Trussville outlasted the Cougars, 50-45, in girls’ action. Clay-Chalkville barely held off a vicious comeback in the boys’ game to squeak by the Huskies, 54-51.
The Cougars dominated early, winning each of the first three quarters to secure a 42-28 lead heading for the final eight minutes of play. However, the visitors had one last push left in the tank, and it nearly led them to an epic comeback.
Hewitt-Trussville went 9-for-10 from the charity strip in the final frame. Two of the Huskies’ top offensive weapons came to life down the stretch.
Harrison Stanley scored seven of his 15 total points in the final minutes while teammate Damon Harper knocked down five of his nine points, but it wasn’t quite good enough as Clay-Chalkville connected on all six of its free-throws to cling to the win.
The Cougars did their damage early. They won the first three quarters of play 16-12, 11-6 and 15-10.
Jalen Jordan and Keithan Parker led Clay-Chalkville with ten points apiece. Anthony Holmes pitched in with nine and Nico Collins finished the night with seven. For Hewitt-Trussville, Glen Horsley was second on the team with 12 points.
In the girls’ game, Huskies’ guard Bailey Berry led the way with 16 points. She was locked in from the outside, draining four of her six attempts from beyond the 3-point line.
Hewitt-Trussville’s pressure defense caused problems for the home team in the fourth quarter, and sent them home with a, 50-45, rivalry game win.
