From Staff Reports
An investigation is being conducted by detectives with the Birmingham Police Department in the death of 27-year-old Charles Burchfield of Birmingham. The incident occurred in the 1600 block of Warrior Road.
On Tuesday around 11;45 a.m., officers from the West Precinct responded to a call regarding a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found the victim lying on the ground next to an apartment building. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue. A suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards said that the preliminary investigation revealed the incident stemmed from a verbal altercation between the victim and his girlfriend over the victim receiving phone calls from his ex-girlfriend.
According to a witness, the suspect shot at the victim twice before the victim began throwing bricks at the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect began to shoot again and struck the victim once to the body.
“A gun should have never been used in this case,” said Edwards.
This is an ongoing investigation, and information will be released as it becomes available.
