The City of Birmingham launched an aggressive weed abatement and blight removal program in September of 2015 as part of the overall RISE (Remove Blight, Increase Value, Strengthen Neighborhoods and Empower Citizens) program designed by the Mayor’s Office and implemented in part by a partnership with the Community Development Department, Planning Engineering and Permits and the Department of Public Works.
In less than 200 days, the City has removed over 400 blighted structures in neighborhoods throughout the City.
“This is our most aggressive attempt ever to remove the blight in our City. The City has pulled together as a team to get this done and we will continue the efforts through the end of the fiscal year with the hope of getting more money allocated in the next fiscal year,” said Mayor William Bell.
Phase II of the RISE program will include incorporating the Birmingham Police Department, Birmingham Fire Department and Code Enforcement officials along with the City’s Municipal Court and will be announced in the coming weeks.
“We appreciate the efforts of all the City employees who are making an effort to change the landscape of the City and get these lots back into productive use,” continued the Mayor.
