BIRMINGHAM –Birmingham City Schools have conformed that Huffman High School is on lockdown following a report of shots fired in the area.
There are numerous Birmingham police units in the immediate area.
We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
According to WBRC, a large section of the parking lot has been taped off by police.
UPDATE: The lockdown has been lifted and students are being permitted to leave. Police have taken at least one person into custody.
According to WBRC, Birmingham Police Lt. Sean Edwards said there were no injuries in the incident.
Edwards told WBRC that just before 2:30 pm. on Tuesday, two students got into a fight.
One of the students called his 19-year-old brother, who came to the campus and began to “recklessly” discharge his gun outside the school, according to Edwards.
He said Huffman school resource officers responded and immediately engaged the 19-year-old suspect. One of the officers fired shots at the suspect, but the suspect was not hit or injured.
The officers chased the suspect, tackled him and arrested him, Edwards said.
Birmingham City Schools issued a statement via social media confirming all students were safe and stating, “All after school activities and sports games have been canceled for Huffman High this afternoon.”
