HOOVER –According to the Hoover police, formal arrest warrants were obtained Wednesday afternoon, charging a suspect in the Tuesday beating of a woman that lead to the death of her unborn child.
“Yesterday at 6:35 p.m. officers responded to a report of an assault that occurred at a residence on Larkspur Drive,” the press release stated. “The 28-year-old victim was found walking near the roadway, close to her home. She appeared to be suffering from serious injuries and was treated by paramedics and then transported to UAB Hospital by a Hoover Fire Department Rescue unit. The victim was also able to communicate with officers and advise that she was approximately seven months pregnant. While being treated for her injuries, hospital personnel informed investigators that the baby did not survive.”
Police said the victim was also able to identify her attacker as her ex-boyfriend. An area-wide BOLO was broadcast to surrounding law enforcement agencies, naming the assailant and possible vehicle descriptions.
At approximately 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, the suspect was captured by Birmingham police officers and an investigator with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, Birmingham Division. He was taken into custody without incident as he was leaving a home in the 200 block of 23rd Terrace NW in Center Point. He was transported to the Hoover City Jail, where he remained overnight.
Detectives obtained arrest warrants this afternoon, charging the suspect as follows:
Christopher Ammons Kemp 29-years-old, of Center Point:
• Capital Murder during the Commission of 1st degree burglary No Bond
• Domestic Violence 1st degree $100,000.00 Bond
The Murder charge stems from a section of Alabama law that allows authorities to charge a suspect with the murder of another human being, including an unborn child. Kemp will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham later today.
