MONTGOMERY –Rebekah Caldwell Mason released a statement Wednesday saying that said she is resigning as senior policy analyst Alabama governor Robert Bentley.
Bentley has been under fire since the release last week of audio tapes of sexually explicit conversions alleged to have been between him and Mason.
Bentley and his wife, Diane, divorced after 50 years of marriage. Rumors of an affair swirled for months and reignited with the release of the tapes.
Bentley admitted making inappropriate comments to Mason during a news conference, where he also denied having an affair with her.
When asked if Mason had asked him to stop, he said no.
Bentley said that he apologized to his family and Mason’s for his inappropriate comments.
Mason served as Bentley’s senior policy adviser, communication adviser and campaign spokesperson at different times. Prior to that, she was a television news anchor in Tuscaloosa.
