BLOUNT COUNTY — At 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Blount County 911 received reports of a person firing a gun at motorists on U.S. 278 in Blount County.
The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and fired at additional persons upon doing so.
At 8:16 a.m., a Blount County deputy saw a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle’s description on U.S. 231, and a chase ensued.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the subject fired upon pursing law enforcement. The chase spanned two counties, beginning in Marshall County and moving to Blount County, then back to Marshall. The suspect’s vehicle crashed at U.S. 278 near Alabama Highway 79 in Blount County. Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and law enforcement at this location.
The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene from an apparent gunshot wound.
Numerous law enforcement agencies are continuing the investigation, including determining the severity of the injuries sustained during the incidents.
The suspect’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
