Hayden jumped out to a 6-0 lead, in part because of a two-run home run by Evin Bibb.
Hewitt-Trussville’s Sara Borden blasted a solo home run and the Lady Huskies clawed back but could never take the lead as they fell to 22-12. Class 5A power Hayden improved to 30-6.
Hewitt celebrated Senior Night, honoring Callie Shields, Bailey Murphy, Devin Moseley and Maddie Dorsett. Dorsett, who has been sidelined with an injury, started at shortstop for just one pitch and then trotted off the field to the cheers of her teammates and the crowd.
Hewitt-Trussville, which finished as the runner-up in Class 7A, Area 6, will be the second seed in the area tournament to begin Thursday, May 5, at Spain Park. The Huskies will face third-seeded Vestavia Hills at 6 p.m. The host Jags, the top-seeded team, face Mountain Brook at 4. The double-elimination tournament will continue Friday and Saturday.
