TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville City Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday was one of welcome.
During the meeting, the Board introduced Joy Tyner as the new principal of Cahaba Elementary School.
“Joy is the perfect fit for Cahaba,” said Pattie Neill, Trussville City Schools Superintendent.
Tyner comes to Trussville from Clinton, Mississippi, with close to 30 years of school experience, primarily in the elementary setting. Tyner completed a brief stint in a middle school, before returning to her roots of elementary administration.
The principal position was initially advertised on March 10, drawing in 50 applicants. From there the pool was narrowed down to 11, and from that 11, five were chosen for an interview. From the five, Tyner made the short list of applicants to be interviewed a second time, and on the same afternoon of her second interview, she accepted the position.
“I’m elated to be here,” said Tyner. “It feels so comfortable, so it must be the right thing for sure.”
Tyner said that at the school she was principal of previously, almost all of the staff had been with her every step of the way. She and her staff set out to create goals of achieving the title of healthiest school in Mississippi, and also 100 percent pass rate on reading, both goals being met with flying colors.
“I’m pretty goal oriented, and I can’t wait to get to know the staff and find out what’s important to them, the parents and the community, and set out on new goals,” said Tyner.
Board member Sid McNeal said Tyner has been presented with a unique opportunity in Trussville.
“You’re not walking into a school with an established feel, you’re going to be able to create that feel, alongside seasoned teachers,” McNeal said.
Although Trussville will be new to Tyner, she already familiar with the Birmingham area, as her daughter attends UAB. Tyner’s husband is also an insurance representative and already has several accounts in Alabama, but Tyner said he is looking forward to further establishing himself here.
Monday Tyner will tour her new stomping grounds and meet her new staff.
“This building has so much history, and I want to get to know it, as well as its people,” Tyner said.
Cahaba Elementary School will be open for the 2016-2017 school year this fall. There will be a meet and greet for students and parents of Cahaba Elementary School May 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Paine Elementary School.
