Summertime! It is a great time of year. During this season we are drawn to change our schedule and lifestyle. We wear different clothes that we don’t wear during any other season, our diet changes to include items fresh from the garden and we suddenly have a strong longing to have some sand between our toes or to wet a hook and catch the one that got away last summer. With children out of school, the traffic at 7:30 each morning takes on a new flow as we navigate with ease. Right now we enjoy the warm days with the cool nights. There is grass to cut and flowers to water. It is such a welcomed change. Summer really does force us into a new lifestyle that seems so short lived. Soon, school will start back, the leaves will change and ole man winter will be back. How can we capitalize on this unique season?
Let’s take a unique glimpse into the life of the greatest leader that ever lived. He was a master at capitalizing on opportunities. Luke describes the life of Jesus during his adolescent years when he writes “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” Luke 2:52 (NIV). Perhaps this summer we can follow the example of Jesus and use this summer to grow in four special areas.
- Wisdom – Try spending some time reading about something you don’t know, plan an experience you have never done before, listen to someone explain what they do for a living or a hobby. Seek opportunities to grow in wisdom
- Stature – What plans do you have this summer to take care of yourself physically? Do you need to exercise more or eat foods that are better for you? Perhaps you need to get some rest, take a break and unwind. Jesus was a master at knowing when to get away from the demands of life.
- Favor with God – Make sure you stay committed to your church attendance, reading the Bible daily and praying about what you just read. Look for opportunities to give of your time to a mission effort or summer camp.
- Favor with men – Plan some special time with friends. Make a phone call, send a card, or do something kind for someone. Help out with a mission effort or summer camp.
Summer is a great time for growth! Make this summer count!
