TRUSSVILLE — The Alabama-Florida Panhandle Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Trussville residents to participate in the 4th annual Longest Day on Monday, June 20.
The Longest Day is held across the country by the Alzheimer’s Association as a way of honoring patients afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers, as well as raising awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association.
According to spokesperson Katie Peters, volunteers form teams and choose an activity which they or loved ones with Alzheimer’s enjoy doing. Participants do their chosen from sunrise to sunset, and the event typically lasts 16 hours. In previous years, participants have engaged in various such as hiking, bowling, running and playing bridge.
“It can be held anywhere participants want it to take place. It’s on their own terms,” said Peters. “It’s really up to the participants.”
The event is held annually on the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the calendar year. According to Peters, this symbolizes the challenges that people with Alzheimer’s face. June is also Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month.
“Every day is the longest day for people with Alzheimer’s,” said Peters.
Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death nationwide, and over 89,000 people are living with the disease in Alabama.
The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization. They seek to provide and enhance care to those affected by Alzheimer’s, and raise funds for the advancement of research and a cure.
There are currently 10 volunteer teams in the Birmingham Area. Anyone interested in forming a volunteer team can do so here or on Facebook. All proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
