MOUNTAIN BROOK – Trussville resident Woodie Eubanks posted a sixth-place finish in the 100th Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by The Country Club of Birmingham (West) on Sunday.
Seventeen-year-old rising high school senior Turk Pettit of Auburn carded a final round even par 71 on the tough Country Club of Birmingham West course to finish at six-under 278 and win the championship by one stroke over rising Vanderbilt University sophomore Patrick Martin of Birmingham. Two-time defending champion Will Cannon of Birmingham carded a three-over 74 to finish into a tie for ninth place at 286.
Only five players broke par for the 72-hole championship with an average score of 76.3 for the entire field.
Eubanks shot 73-72-67-72 for a four-day total of 284, right at par.
Richard Douglas of Trussville tied for 51st with a 306, 22 over par, carding rounds of 75-70-82-79.
The field was cut to the low 66 scores and ties for the final two rounds. The cut line fell at 151 (nine over). Missing the cut were many fine golfers, including Pinson Valley’s Caleb O’Toole (155, tied for 94th), Trussville’s Parker Kinzer (156, tied for 99th) and Wallace State-Hanceville and former Hewitt-Trussville standout B.J. Scott (159, tied for 114th).
