From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
TRUSSVILLE –“They’ve just been pouring in,” Captain Jeff Bridges said. “Parents are bringing in their kids, businesses are coming by. The outpouring of appreciation has just been overwhelming.”
In the aftermath of five officers being gunned down in Dallas, Tex. on Thursday night, four with the police department and one with Dallas Area Rapid Transit, the Trussville community has shown up in force to support their police officers on Friday morning.
“They’re bringing cards, letters, food, you name it,” Bridges said. “The kids come in and hug and tell us they love us. It’s a good place to be right now.”
In addition to citizens, local business representatives have been stopping by to bring food for the officers on duty.
Bridges said that it was difficult to watch the events in Dallas unfold because the slain officers were just doing their job and protecting the citizens who were protesting and marching.
Ironically, the marchers were protesting police actions in two other states, Louisiana and Minnesota. In both instances, police shot and killed African-American males. Both men were reportedly armed at the time of the shootings and both cases are still under investigation.
The show of support from the community after such a tragedy was a welcome gesture for the officers.
“It’s great to work somewhere that you really feel like the community supports and and appreciates what you do,” Bridges said. “I know this means a lot to our officers.”
