TRUSSVILLE – Former Hewitt-Trussville star football player Bailey McElwain is now a former Stanford Cardinal recruit.
The three-star linebacker/fullback will instead suit up this fall for the Vanderbilt Commodores. His decision was revealed Monday afternoon, reflected by his new bio on his Twitter account – “Vanderbilt Student-Athlete.” With the Vandy symbol of an anchor and a down arrow, symbolizing “Anchor Down,” a phrase Vandy fans and players have come to use over the past few years.
McElwain was committed to Stanford but had planned to spend a year at Lake Forest Academy in Illinois. McElwain had visited Vanderbilt and got a scholarship offer in February. At the time, he told the Tribune he was still solid with Stanford.
The Commodores coaching staff had told him he’d be a starter at fullback as a freshman. Some services rate him as high as No. 3 in the nation as a fullback.
It appears the lure of the SEC, playing closer to home, and playing next fall were all factors in the decision. Tweeting to some disappointed Cardinal fans, he said he “will always have love for Stanford.”
