According to Lt. Sean Edwards with the Birmingham Police Department, the mother went inside to make a purchase and left her child in the car. A concerned citizen notified the officers that the child had been left inside the car.
Once officers responded, they noticed that the child in the car without it running, but the windows were cracked. Officers forced the windows down enough to retrieve the baby.
As officers were attempting to enter the car, the mother came out of the store. The fire department was notified and came to the scene, and the child was not harmed.
DHR was also notified and came to the scene, and they activated a safety plan for the child. The child is now in the custody of DHR.
The mother was thoroughly questioned, but according to Edwards, will not be charged at this time. The status of the child will be determined later by DHR.
