I never cared for this restaurant, but I know a lot of folks did.

Unless they have sold, the owners of Joel’s are getting up in the years!

Tim, I always shop at mom & pop when possible. But if you shop at super stores you are still helping the area, because local folks work there.

Respectfully I would have to disagree. Things have gotten progressively better they last 5 or 6 years as compared to the years after Sept. 11th. Granted they were not great but they were better. People were spending money again. It wasn’t until this summer that I noticed a real drawback in spending by individuals. If you drive through Trussville a significant portion of small businesses have disappeared. Vacant buildings are everywhere. It’s a real shame.

And that’s not blaming or crediting anyone. A terrorist attack, crash of the housing market, failing of big banks and record unemployment all in our the past 15 years. We have moved through it as a country. Small business owners have worked harder and made less for a long time. Society has trended towards low cost and fast over quality and service.

First, I’m so sad Cafe on Main is closing. I just gave Mayor Melton a call and this is his answer to your question, Alex Deal …and of course he added that anyone is welcomed to give him a call anytime at 888-619-9997

“The city’s role is to work with and direct the property owner to the Downtown Redevelopment Authority so that the DRA can help and encourage new businesses and the right type of tenant to come into town. The city reinvigorated the DRA 5 years ago because that Authority, under state law, has a series of options available to them to incentivize businesses that are not legally available to municipalities. On a personal note, I’m very sorry to hear about Billy’s health and we have him and the family in our prayers. – Mayor Melton”

    Hope that helps.

Alex, that’s a good question. It’s worth mentioning that “the city” includes more than elected officials. The city is also people like you and me. There are a couple of appointed groups within the city, namely the Grow Trussville economic development committee and RDA, which are made up of citizens who volunteer their time to help recruit and grow businesses. I’m fortunate to serve in both groups along with several other citizens. I can tell you that I became aware of Cafe on Main closing on Friday. By Saturday, I was having a conversation with a restaurant owner who has expressed interest in a downtown Trussville location. I have also been in conversation with him this morning. I imagine others on these committees are doing the same. Also, there is no reason that citizens not on these committees can’t be talking to potential business owners about available opportunities in Trussville. To paraphrase JFK, ask not what your city can do for you….

Depends on your business I guess Dustin. Bc we are self employed as well and the past 8 years have been horrible. We closed our shop but still have the service end. Struggling bc we have to much bills and not enough income is not an economy getting better. Small business owners are working harder but the rewards are much less.
