FULTONDALE – UPDATE: The suspect is in police custody.
ORIGINAL: Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for an armed and dangerous suspect in Fultondale. Fultondale Police, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies, tracking dogs and a helicopter are all involved in the search.
According to WIAT, a crash occurred on Ridgebrook Road, but it is unknown who’s involved. A short time after shots were fired on Sayers Road and
Fultonbrook Road Law enforcement has a helicopter in the air and have reportedly spotted the suspect. Other officers on the ground are trying to locate him in a heavily wooded area.
School busses weren’t allowed into the neighborhood due to the active crime scene. There were five elementary school and 10 high school students that were unable to take the bus.
According to Jefferson County Board of Education spokeswoman Nez Calhoun, the elementary school students’ parents drove their children to school at their own risk, even though traffic in and out of the neighborhood was not allowed. It is unknown at this time if any of the high school students walked to school or drove themselves. The high school is working to obtain that information now.
