MONTGOMERY – Alabama driver license holders many now renew a license up to 180 days prior to its expiration.
New legislation has extended the renewal period from 60 to 180 days. The 60-day grace period after expiration is not set to change.
The renewal option is available at all of the ALEA Driver License Examining Offices, as well as online and at probate offices.
ALEA plans to soon add the option to its self-serve kiosks.
Additionally, the new law exempts active-duty service members from the 180-day renewal period if they are deployed during that period.
