TRUSSVILLE – With Trussville’s rich history also comes a museum to display all of its photographs, artifacts and memorabilia.
The Trussville History Museum opened in 1988, but has never been open to the public on a consistent basis. This is one thing the City of Trussville Historical Board is looking to change.
The Trussville History Museum is having an open house on October 16 between 1 and 4 p.m. inside Heritage Hall. The public is invited to view the museum, as well as new artifacts and displays. Beginning this day, the museum will also be open at least one Sunday a month.
Jane Alexander with the Trussville Historical Society and the Trussville Historical Board said she wants the residents of Trussville to know the museum is there for the public’s use and enjoyment.
“It’s really interesting, especially to people who’ve lived here at some time or another because people see things they recognize,” Alexander said.
The artifacts in the museum tell a story of what life was like in centuries past in the city of Trussville.
“We’re trying to get some general information about the kind of people that lived here and what they did for a living,” Alexander said.
Moving forward, Alexander hopes to incorporate special programming and rotating exhibits into the museum. Because there are space limitations, Alexander said she hopes they can acquire items to bring in for a limited time, to keep up the public’s interest in the museum. She also hopes to bring in programs to draw in visitors who might be interested in specific artifacts or topics.
“There’s one gentleman here in Trussville who collects arrowheads and other early artifacts, we’re hoping to have him do a program on some new material,” Alexander said.
Additionally Alexander said the museum has a wealth of photographs that they don’t have identification for, so the Historical Board is working on putting together photo albums to show to longtime Trussville residents in hopes of identifying each person.
While the society is currently focusing on having the museum open on a more consistent basis, Alexander said they are also focused on providing visitors of the museum a comprehensive look at Trussville life over the years.
“We want to get enough information, enough artifacts from people so that we can have a good sampling of what Trussville was in the 1800s and early 1900s because things change, and change often,” Alexander said.
In addition to the Sundays the Trussville History Museum will be open, they are also available by appointment. Contact the Trussville Historical Board through Facebook to set up a viewing.

I had no idea we have a museum. It seems like a great place for the school children to go on a field trip.

The museum is located inside Heritage Hall. Heritage Hall is on the East Mall between Cahaba Elementary School and the swimming pool. Since the Historical Board is all volunteers appointed by the City of Trussville, we do not have staff to provide for an open museum during the week. However, we are available to open by appointment most any time and we are planning monthly events that will include an open museum. Contact us on our Facebook page, Trussville Historical Board, for more information.
