BIRMINGHAM – Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a convenience store in the 700 block of Heflin Avenue West around 11:15 p.m. They were called on reports of a store clerk that had been robbed and shot.
Deputies arrived to find a 39-year-old victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and remains in critical condition.
Information gathered at the scene indicated that the victim had closed the store for the night and was placing items in the front passenger seat of his vehicle when a black male suspect came from behind the vehicle and shot him. The suspect picked up a money bag, and fired at the victim again before fleeing on foot. The suspect was wearing a black shirt, black pants and white shoes.
Deputies used a tracking dog to attempt to locate the suspect. The dog tracked the scent into a nearby intersection where it is believed the suspect got into a car and drove away.
This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-325-1450.
