The Clay-Chalkville High School boys and girls basketball teams kicked their seasons off on the right foot, sweeping a pair of games against John Carroll on Tuesday night.
In the opener, the Lady Cougars’ defense held John Carroll to single digit points in the final three quarters and pulled away to a 53-26 victory. Raven Omar and
Alex Johnson led the way offensively, with Omar scoring 18 and Johnson chipping in 16. Amiya Payne registered 10 points.
“Tonight was a good start,” head coach Justin Haynie said. “We’ve got a lot of improving to do to get where we want to be, but it’s always good to start the season with a victory.”
The boys team dispatched of the Cavaliers easily as well, 67-39. A strong second quarter gave the Cougars a 31-18 halftime lead that they extended in each of the final two periods.
“It’s always good to get off to a good start,” head coach Jeremy Monceaux said. “We did some good things defensively. We didn’t shoot the ball that well but we held them to 39 points. The defense is what we’re all about. If we can hold the other team down, we’ll always have a chance to win.”
Jalen Jordan led the way with 18 points, followed by Anthony Holmes’ 17 points. Jovan Gale, Otis Black and Eddie Smith all chipped in six.
Both teams remain home against Hueytown on Thursday. The girls tip at 6 p.m., with the boys game to follow at 7:30.
