CLAY — Alex Johnson had been looking forward to this day for a while.
“A long time,” the Clay-Chalkville senior girls basketball player said. “Since I was like, 7.”
The Lady Cougars post player signed to play at Alabama A&M on Thursday afternoon at the school as her parents, family, coaches, teammates, classmates and friends applauded her.
She liked the A&M coaching staff, headed by new coach Margaret Richards.
But just the opportunity to pay Division I basketball, the goal she’s dreamed of for so long, was a dream come true. “It’s a blessing,” she said.
She believes she needs to work on her off hand, her left hand, and work on increasing her shooting range. At 6-foot-1, she will play the power forward position most likely, and she’ll need an outside shot to keep the big girls guarding her honest.
She said her strengths are her shot-blocking ability and her defense.
In the meantime, she hopes to lead the Lady Cougars to an area title and back to the regionals in Jacksonville and eventually to the BJCC for the state semifinals and finals.
