Veterans Day. The only Marches in the streets today should be the Veterans Day Parades taking place across America. Go salute some Heroes if you got a minute during your busy workday. If you’re marching in protest of Election results I suggest you hide from those who give you the right to have hurt feelings, might be a good time to go get a job.We agree to your right to march, it doesnt mean we agree with You.

I have no problem with peaceful protests. There was a peaceful protest Tuesday when millions of Americans voted for a change from politics as usual. The candidates were deeply flawed but we made our choice. Go ahead and protest a legal election. That’s your right. But you don’t have the right to destroy property and hurt people so remain peaceful please.

Those protesters should ask the 100 million people that didn’t vote. Why didn’t they vote? Because in the history of the USA. There hasn’t not been a party holding office three consecutive terms.

I did not attend the rally because I think it’s premature and unfair to protest a President-elect. I do wish that all of you folks who want everyone to fall in line behind President Trump had done the same for President Obama. I will say that the march following the rally passed directly beneath my window, and the only chant I heard was “Love trumps hate.” Surely you good Christian people (I’m saying that only half-ironically) can’t object to that.

  60. 69

    Scott Buttram

Christie Darden Gingras, I’ll be happy to answer your question. First, I appreciate your question, the opportunity to address your concern and I appreciate you as a reader of The Trussville Tribune.

The anti-Trump protests are a major news story throughout the country. When those protest reach the largest city in Alabama – which just happens to share a city limits line with Trussville – it is news. We are obligated to report the news in our area regardless of our opinion of the event.

When we reported the protesters at Target a few months ago, we were attacked by members of the LGBTQ community for reporting that story. They didn’t think the protesters deserved any coverage. There will always be someone or some group that wants to define what is or isn’t news for everyone else. As a newspaper, we owe it to our readers to never allow that to impact our decision to cover of any event or story.

If anyone on our staff ever allows their personal opinion to determine what they report or don’t report, they’ll need to find somewhere else to work.

If you’re interested in my personal opinion of the protest, you can find that on my personal Facebook page where it belongs. My comments there are public. If I decide to publish my opinion in The Trussville Tribune, you can rest assured that it will be clearly defined as an opinion/commentary.

I am personally very concerned with the current state of the news media in America. I am concerned with the blending of “news” and “opinion” to the point that it is barely distinguishable.

I am concerned with fake “news” outlets on the Internet that falsely report slanted stories to suit their agenda. I am concerned with once legitimate news outlets that now pander to their audience by cherry picking their stories and ignore the facts. I will do my very best to make sure the Tribune never drifts into that territory.

Our readers are very diverse with a wide range of interest. What is news for one, may not be news for another. We understand that and I hope you do, too. We welcome reader’s comments, as we have yours, both on social media and in print with Letters to the Editor.

I don’t want to lose you or anyone as a reader. But if reporting major news events of the communities we cover and the surrounding areas causes you to leave, I’ll wish you well and thank you for your time.

  61. 70

    Christie Darden Gingras

Thank you for the clarification. I just think this should take a back seat to other news. The more attention they are given the worse these incidents and more prevalent they become.

  62. 71

    Sheila Wingard

Why does there have to be a protest anyway. I didn’t see people protesting when Obama was elected for 2 terms. Suck it up. Nothing will change Trump is President like it or not.. Do like everyone else .. Get a job!!

  63. 72

    Tanya Coy Richards

While the video was very disgusting, the incident occurred because of a traffic accident. The police have no idea why the person videoing was shouting about Trump. The lady yelling about her stuff was the one he reported hit with his car.

  64. 74

    Richard Jones Jr.

I was stating why i believe “your generation” is acting the way they are. Then you started with the blame game. “Who gave out those participation trophies? We give them to ourselves???” That statement you made is looking for someone to blame. If you are going to defend your generation then you get grouped in with them. They are out there whining and crying because they didnt get there way and by you defending them you are guilty by association.

  65. 75

    Alex Minton

Hopefully it will stay peaceful. I would hate to see any of the progress Birmingham has made over the last few years be burned or vandalized.

  66. 76

    Scott Buttram

I don’t think there is an expectation of everyone falling in line with Trump. If there is, it’s totally irrational. Every president since I’ve been of voting age (Reagan) has endured the wrath of the opposition. Social media has accelerated the behavior to new highs, though.

For me, it’s the contrast between those who opposed Obama and those who oppose Trump. It’s the irony of protesting perceived “hate” speech with chants of “F— Trump.” It’s the nouvo “let’s take to the streets and march” of this generation. And, no, marching isn’t new. But marching every time you don’t get your way is.

I guess I’m just a middle aged guy who remembers the Civil Rights marches and the Vietnam protesters and sees the current folks as a bunch of lightweight wannabes.

Further, it’s an underlying feeling that maybe all of the recent rioting over this cause or that cause may have been a major reason of the surge to Trump that I really didn’t consider until the recent protests started. I probably should have, but I honestly didn’t.

That’s what I’m having a problem with as well Sheila, what’s this protest about? Here in Birmingham they referred to it as a “unity” protest yet they are shouting “not my president”. That’s not promoting unity but just the opposite in continuing to divide our nation. Your protest loses credibility when you SAY its about unity but your actions and chants say otherwise. Thanks for keeping it peaceful, but while you’re at it, use your voices and platform for positive UNITY rather than further dividing our nation.

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion. But remember – it’s just an opinion. Plenty can be changed due to these protests and your assumption that these protesters have nothing better to do is actually accurate – to them, this is the most important thing they could be doing. So, have a seat. Have them all, actually.

Throughout his campaign, Donald Trump utilized his right to publicly express bigotry to many minority groups. In turn, those offended by Donald Trump have the right to publicly express discontent with him and what his campaign stands for. I hope you can respect that right that we all have in this country.

News is news. You don’t have to agree with it, but it deserves to be reported.

  92. 110

    Justin Williamson

There’s good and bad in every group. You can choose to focus on the bad and bash an entire generation and throw moms under the bus, like you have. Or you can look at the part of my generation who is going to work every day. The part who volunteers regularly. The part who pursues postgraduate educations because college degrees don’t mean as much as they used to. The part who donates money to important causes. The part who tells our kids the Biblical principles of “Love one another” and “treat others the way we want to be treated.” The part that sees injustice and confronts it. The part that will be paying social security taxes for decades even though we probably won’t ever get it back.

It all depends on where you choose to look, Richard.

Why do you “the media” continue to promote this crap? I’m sure there are real stories you could write about if you look hard enough.

It’s call freedom of speech they aren’t bothering anyone so…why are you so worried about it

Our president-elect isn’t exactly a paragon of classy language. But yes, there was some unfortunate language I heard watching the video of the rally.

Good. They need to keep protesting. This POS is going to destroy the country. Someone should be protesting it.

The civil rights was a peaceful protest for the most part. And it didn’t change the president.

And what do you think will happen? He’ll step down? They’ll reverse the election? Come one. Surely you’re better than that. This is the stupidest thing yet. People that didn’t want obama never acted like this. It’s time to put your Big Girl panties on and get over it.

The leftist liberal protestors show how hypocritical and intolerant they really are but they are so blind and stupid they don’t even see their hypocrisy. While Trump made a lot of stupid and divisive comments, he didn’t invite destructive riots that destroyed private property. Like so many liberals, you can have your right to your own opinion until it disagrees with theirs; then you become a bigoted racist and sexist pig. Sounds just like the same political tool used by fascists

    Amy Gilbert

This protest is peaceful as well!! The only people talking about violence are the people who do not support us. Those are the people sending death threats for us exercising our rights.

    Jennifer Chinnis Lawley

I don’t give a damn who brought it back, i still think it’s funny.

I personally don’t care if you protest or not. All I want to know is what does it change? Why can’t people admit defeat and go with the flow?? Acting like an entitled, spoiled brat doesn’t help anything. But you have the right to do whatever you want.

    Timothy M Taylor

Nope. There in stands the problem.
