CLAY – The Clay-Chalkville boys couldn’t quite finish off the Hueytown Golden Gophers in the season’s second game of the year, Hueytown taking a 54-47 win Thursday night at Clay-Chalkville Gym.
Missed opportunities hurt the Cougars throughout the night. Jalen Jordan led the Cougars with 17 points while Anthony Holmes added eight.
Clay had opened the season Tueday night with a 67-39 blasting of John Carroll Catholic at Clay. Jordan led all scorers with 18 points and Anthony Holmes added 17. Jovan Gale, Otis Black and Eddie Smith all chipped in six.
The Cougars (1-1) travel to Woodlawn on Tuesday for a 7:30 game.
The Clay girls continued their winning ways Thursday by turning back Hueytown 59-28 Thursday night. The Lady Cougars opened up the season with a 53-26 victory over John Carroll. Raven Omar scored 18 and Alex Johnson scored 16. Amiya Payne registered 10 points.
The Lady Cougars (2-0) travel to Woodlawn to face the Lady Colonels at 5:30 p.m.
