From Trussville Tribune staff reports
Today marks the 16th anniversary of the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. On that morning, the buildings of the World Trade Center were destroyed by two jetliners flown by terrorist hijackers, ending the lives of close to 3,000 people. This morning, people throughout the nation have gathered to commemorate and hold moments of silence for the historic event.
Survivors of the attack, as well as relatives of those who were lost and first responders, are present at the World Trade Center memorial to read aloud the names of the victims who died that day. Bells in New York City tolled to mark the times that he planes hit the buildings.
President Donald Trump observed a moment of silence at the White House and at the Pentagon where 189 people died when the hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 was flown into the western portion of the building.
Thousands have gathered at Ground Zero, where tonight two pillars of light will be shown to represent the towers that once stood in lower Manhattan.
