HANOI, Vietnam — President Donald Trump addressed questions regarding the ongoing Roy Moore scandal Saturday morning by saying he “has not seen very much” about it during his recent trip to Asia, the Associated Press reports.
In a Washington Post article published Thursday, Leigh Corfman alleged that Roy Moore initiated a sexual encounter with her in 1979, when she was 14 years old. Three other women also said that Moore had sexual contact with them while they were teenagers. Moore has denied the charges, claiming that they are an attempt to “defrock” his Senate campaign.
Moore is running against Democrat Doug Jones to fill the seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The seat is currently held by Luther Strange, who was appointed by then-Governor Robert Bentley; Moore defeated Strange in a runoff election. The winner of the race will be decided by a December 12 election.
Speaking to reporters Saturday, Trump referred back to an official White House statement that called on Moore to “do the right thing and step aside” if the allegations are true.
Trump had endorsed Strange during the primary, but after Moore’s primary victory he deleted his tweets supporting Strange and said he would campaign for Moore.
Recent polls have shown that Moore and Jones are roughly tied in the race.
