From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
Basketball season is underway and Hewitt-Trussville and Clay-Chalkville’s teams are off to a strong start, setting up an early-season test.
Clay-Chalkville’s boys opened with a 67-64 win over Grissom. The Cougars were set to host Hewitt-Trussville Tuesday at Clay.
The Lady Cougars started off 3-0 with wins over Oakman, J.B. Pennington and McAdory. They also were to host HT on Tuesday.
Hewitt-Trussville’s girls won the championship of the 2017 St. James Basketball Tip-Off Tournament in Montgomery.
The Huskies opened the tournament with a game against Park Crossing on Friday. Coach Tonya Hunter’s team won 65-29. On Saturday the team played Prattville Christian in the semifinals and won 56-22. That set up the championship game between the Huskies and Loachapoka. Hewitt hit 11 three-pointers and won 70-30.
“This tournament was a tuneup tournament to see where we were as a team,” coach Tonya Hunter said. “Our team went down to Montgomery and did a lot of positive things. Our chemistry is strong this year and the kids are having fun. We are excited about the rest of the season.”
The first home game is scheduled for Thursday as the team will host Center Point. They’ll host the Bryant Bank Tournament starting Nov. 18. The event will feature eight teams and promises to be one of the most competitive tournaments in the state. The Lady Huskies will open the tournament Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. as they face Briarwood. Spain Park lost in the 7A State final last season. Homewood was the 6A State Champion in 2017.
The Hewitt-Trussville boys opened with a 73-52 win over Spain Park. The game was a part of the Ramsay Showcase event at Ramsay High School on Saturday.
Patrick Bishop led the Huskies with 16 points. Cameron Glover scored eight points in the final quarter and had 15 points for the game. Damon Harper and Jaxon Hunter added 11 points each for the victorious Huskies.
Head Coach Marcus Thomas was pleased with the resiliency the team showed. “I am proud of the effort the team gave. The seniors showed leadership when the game became close.”
The Huskies will play their home opener Thursday against Center Point.
