BIRMINGHAM — Detectives from the Birmingham Police Department are investigating a double homicide that occurred Thursday in the 200 block of 51st Street North in Woodlawn.
The victims were a 17-year-old black male and 51-year-old black female, both of Birmingham.
Officers from the East Precinct responded to the listed location around 8:35 a.m. on two people shot in a vehicle, Lt. Sean Edwards of the BPD said in a release. Officers arrived and observed a black male lying on top of a female next to the sidewalk both suffering from gunshot wounds to the body.
Officers also observed a silver Ford Mustang parked next to the victims riddled with bullet holes. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and transported the male victim to UAB Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased by hospital staff. The female victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Preliminary investigation revealed the male victim was standing outside of the vehicle talking to the female victim when an unidentified vehicle pulled up next to them and began firing an unknown weapon fatally striking both parties.
Witnesses stated that the vehicle fled the scene traveling eastbound on 9th Avenue North. The motive has not been established yet but detectives are tracking several good tips.
“Due to the multiple rounds fired, this crime was definitely intentional. Solving this case will depend on that key witness coming forward,” Lt. Edwards said.
