BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation after a shooting that occurred on Monday, according to BPD.
At approximately 7:28 p.m. officers from West Precinct responded to the the 4700 block of Carver Avenue on a person shot. Upon arrival, officers found the victim lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest area. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene.
The victim was identified as Gregory Walker, 61, of Birmingham.
Preliminary investigation suggests the victim and his relative/friend got into a physical altercation with the suspect.
The suspect told detectives that the victim’s Toyota Camry collided with his Chevrolet Silverado earlier during the day. The victim allegedly left the scene of the accident. The suspect stated later that day he observed the driver of the Toyota sitting on the porch of a residence near the incident location.
The suspect went to the residence to question the victim about the accident. The suspect stated a black vehicle with a trailer then pulled up at the residence (possibly victim’s brother). The suspect stated a verbal dispute took place, which later turned into a physical confrontation.
The suspect stated the victim pulled out a handgun and began striking him, while the second individual began punching and kicking him. The suspect stated he managed to pull out his gun and fire at the victim and the other unknown individual who were assaulting him.
The suspect stated he then fled the scene, and shortly afterwards, notified the responding officers who were one block away from the scene. The suspect was taken to the administration building for further questioning, but was later released.
