TRUSSVILLE — Members of the Josiah Brunson Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, were honored to celebrate the accomplishments of Desmond “Desi”Allen Gillespie, Jr. with a chapter scholarship at their January meeting. Joining Desi were his parents, Allen, Sr., and Sula Gillespie and his high school guidance counselor, Heather Winship.
The DAR Good Citizen Contest is open to all area high school seniors. Four local schools participated in the contest this year. The winners and their respective schools are as follows: Brian Tafoya Montes, Center Point High School; Jennifer Wickert, Fultondale High School; Desmond Allen Gillespie, Jr., Hewitt-Trussville High School; and Maison Tanner, Pinson High School.
The winners from each school have the opportunity to enter the essay scholarship portion of the contest. Three independent judges choose the overall winner, and that student’s essay is forward to the next level of competition.
