MONTGOMERY — The Alabama Attorney General’s office is investigating the campaign finances of several current and former state officials, according to a column from AL.com’s Kyle Whitmire.
This week, several of these officials received subpoenas demanding that they show documentation that their campaign finance reports are accurate. Though the report does not name any specific politicians by name, Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill said that the investigation, which was initiated by the state’s special prosecutions division, is “interested in expenditures that are not delineated.”
In other words, investigators are looking at how state officials have spent money raised through their campaigns. Many officials do not itemize expenditures over $100 in their finance reports, despite state law that requires them to do so. Others, according to the report, simply report that they had paid off credit card bills, without revealing what those credit cards paid for.
