CLANTON – Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has declared the week of Feb. 19 to Feb. 23 “Severe Weather Awareness Week,” according to the Alabama Emergency Management Agency.
“Looking back on 2017, we are reminded of the importance of being prepared for severe weather,” Ivey said. “I urge all citizens to remain prepared at all times for bad weather, but to especially use the week of February 18th through the 23rd to ensure their homes and their families are ready for the severe weather season.”
AEMA along with the National Weather Service and the governor are encouraging the public to build emergency kits and practice with family members to be better prepared in case of weather disasters. NWS said that March, April and May are Alabama’s primary severe weather months.
“Based on historical data, Alabama is more likely to experience severe weather during the primary tornado season, however it is important for residents to be prepared every day,” AEMA Director Brian Hastings said.
The two organizations will focus on different severe weather themes during the week. These themes are:
Feb. 19: Thunderstorms
Feb. 20: Flash flooding
Feb. 21: Tornado safety
Feb. 22: Lightning
Feb. 23: Receiving severe weather information
