TRUSSVILLE — The Hewitt-Trussville lacrosse teams are underway for the 2018 season.
The girls opened up in Huntsville vs. the James Clemons Jets. Liily McCormick and Haley Wilcox scored. But the girls came up a little short as they lost 13-8.
The boys bounced back from a loss to No. 2 Briarwood to beat Prattville 16-0 on Saturday. Garren Nowell, Sam Cork, Sam Wilks, Dexter Massey and Alex Lange all combined to light up the scoreboard. While Chase Adams, Stephen Curlee, Richard Zimmerman, and Lyons Shaffer forced a shutout on defense.
On Sunday, the Huskies suited up again to play Huntsville High. It was a back-and-forth game to the very end. Sam Cork and Sam Wilks had “hat tricks” (three or more goals) with Nowell, Massey, Lange and Alex Tarasolli adding scores. Big 6-foot-6 Sam Cork scored with 1:30 left in the game to get the win 11-10. Currently that places the Huskies at No. 6 in the state.
“Our guys have been through so much adversity already this season,” said coach Jamey Curlee. “So many distractions and issues on and off the field. But we are beginning to see the value of hard work and discipline. Doing the little things right makes a huge difference. Pride in what you do and who you represent will motivate you to be successful. With that close win against Huntsville, we can see the value of our efforts.”
The junior varsity boys beat James Clemons 13-4 to improve to a stellar 4-0.
Both teams have a big matchup at Mountain Brook on Thursday. Mountain Brook’s No. 3 varsity team and JV are also undefeated. JV teams play at 6 p.m. and varsities play at 7:30 p.m.
