HUFFMAN — This afternoon both the Birmingham police and firefighters were called to Huffman High school in response to a report of an accidential shooting, according to the Birmingham Police Department.
The Birmingham City School system released a brief statement: “Two students were involved in a shooting during dismissal today at Huffman High School. The school was placed on a brief lockdown, and police were called to the scene. Students have been released and police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.”
Of the three injured, two students, a male victim and a female victim, were critically injured in the shooting. The female victim was a 17-year old who was transported to UAB Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released yet.
The surviving student was listed as critical but stable condition. The adult victim was treated and released at the scene.
“Birmingham detectives are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation which will include many interviews and processing of video,” stated Public Information Officer Lt. Peter Wiliston. “The gun involved in the incident has been recovered as evidence.”
