TRUSSVILLE – The Engineering Academy at Hewitt-Trussville High School sent 18 teams to the UAB Science and Engineering Fair on March 3. Students who placed in the top three will be able to go to the April State Science Fair.
“Students have been working hard on their projects all year, following the engineering design process to develop a working prototype to solve their chosen problem,” said Jason Dooley of the HTHS Engineering Academy. “We are very proud of all of our students who participated.”
The following is a list of students who placed in the top three at the fair along with honorable mentions, according to HTHS.
1st Place in the Energy and Transportation Category – Ian Knapp, Michael Rodriguez, and David Murrell with their design that can retrofit an existing longboard with brakes.
2nd Place in the Energy and Transportation Category – Vraj Patel and Emily Coggins with their prototype that utilizes microwave sensors to add blind spot detection onto existing cars.
3rd Place in the Energy and Transportation Category – Hayden Parks, Drew Kinzer, and Nathan Feagans with their emergency solar panel umbrella system.
1st Place in the Engineering Category – Long Nguyen, Ethan Swatek, and Cannon Riccio with their 3D printed affordable leg braces.
2nd Place in the Engineering Category – Jacob Hayes and Joseph Seagle with their automatic drink lid dispenser.
Honorable Mention in the Engineering Category – Jade Thomas, Jaylan Maddox, and Anna Houser with their adjustable cellphone grip and stylus for individuals suffering from Arthritis.
Honorable Mention in the Engineering Category – Caleb Knox, Brandon Breau, and Sam Thompson with their automatic stop sign indication.
Honorable Mention in the Engineering Category – Connor Gallagher with his 3D printed compact eyeglasses.
Special Awards – Yale Science and Engineering Association Most Outstanding Exhibit Award – Hayden Parks, Drew Kinzer, and Nathan Feagans with their emergency solar panel umbrella system.
