MIAMI –A new pedestrian bridge that opened on Saturday on the campus of Florida International University, killing and injuring several people.
Officials are reluctant to give specific numbers for injuries and fatalities because recovery is in the early stages and they don’t yet know how many people may be trapped under the bridge.
First responders from surrounding jurisdictions arrived on scene to assist with the rescue operation.
According to a fact sheet about the bridge on FIU’s website, it cost $14.2 million to build, and was funded as part of a $19.4 million grant from the US Department of Transportation.
