BIRMINGHAM − On Thursday, March 22, Governor Kay Ivey stopped in to visit with family and supporters at a campaign fundraiser for Jefferson County District Attorney Mike Anderton.
The fundraiser was hosted at The Club in Birmingham. Anderton was introduced to the crowded room by Jefferson County Constable Jonathan Barbee.
“This is very humbling,” said Anderton. ” I’ve been in the DA’s office here in Birmingham for 33 years, prosecuting criminals and trying to protect the people of Jefferson County. I’ve tried to take care of the victims, take care of the police, and take care of every one of you. Governor Ivey had faith in what I was doing. She appointed me to the position when it came open recently, and I appreciate that.”
“I want to continue taking care of the people of Jefferson County, but I need your help. I need your support, and I need your prayers.”
“The Jefferson County’s DA’s office has been in turmoil for a long time through no fault of its own. I want to right this ship. I want to keep going for the people of Jefferson County with integrity, with honesty and with transparency,” said Anderton.
Anderton was appointed District Attorney of the Birmingham Division in November, 2017 when the previous DA was found guilty of perjury and removed from the position.
At that time, Gov. Ivey said, “I am proud to appoint Mike Anderton as Jefferson County District Attorney. Out of all the applicants, Mike had the most experience, and I know he will work effectively, and with integrity, for the people of Birmingham and all of Jefferson County. Having dedicated his legal career to bringing justice to innocent victims and their families, and working 33 years in the Jefferson County DA’s Office, I am confident in Mike’s abilities to effectively serve as District Attorney.”
Anderton is running as a Republican in the June 5th primary election. He is a native of Birmingham and lives in east Jefferson County with Margaret, his wife of 36 years. The couple has three children and three grandchildren.
