BIRMINGHAM — Today, the Birmingham City Council approved funding for a downtown stadium and renovation to Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex, totaling $90 million, according to AL.com. The city will pay $3 million per year for 30 years to fund the projects.
The vote was 6-3, with the project being opposed by councilors Shelia Tyson, Darrell O’Quinn and Lashunda Scales. This came after four hours of debate, discussion and public comments. Birmingham residents voiced concerns with the project, with one saying that people living nearby will have to move when parking is added to the complex.
Several other entities will be contributing yearly payments, including Jefferson County, which will pay $1 million per year, also for 30 years. The BJCC Authority will commit $10.7 million while UAB and its corporate partners will pay $4 million for 10 years.
