TRUSSVILLE –According to police, a Trussville man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly firing his gun at a homeowner and shooting his own dog instead.
On Saturday, Trussville police officers responded to the 100 block of Kingstown Circle on a shots fired call.
“As police arrived they found Michael Jeremy Downs, 38 of Trussville attempting to leave the scene,” Sergeant Michael Bruce said. “Upon investigation it was determined that Downs and a 38-year-old white male became involved in a verbal argument inside the home. At some point during the argument Downs pulled out a .357 magnum pistol and attempted to shoot the victim.”
According to Bruce, Downs missed the victim, shooting his own dog which was on the couch near the intended target inside the house.
Downs was arrested and transported to the Trussville City Jail. Monday, Downs was formally charged with attempted murder and is being held on a $170,000 bond.
The dog was picked up and being treated by the Greater Birmingham Humane Society and is expected to recover.
