BIRMINGHAM — A homicide investigation is underway after an unborn baby died when the mother was shot in the abdomen, according to Lt. Pete Wiliston of the Birmingham Police Department.
The incident occurred at around 8 p.m. on April 6. Officers from the North Precinct responded to a call of a female shot on 916 1st St. North in Birmingham. She was mistakenly reported as being shot in the leg but was later found to have been shot in the abdomen. She was also found to be pregnant when she was shot.
The victim was taken by Birmingham Fire and Rescue to UAB Hospital where the unborn baby died. The baby was taken to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office to determine if the shooting caused the death.
Today, the Coroner’s Office determined that the baby did indeed die from the injury that the mother suffered. Birmingham Police say that they are now investigating the case as a homicide and attempted murder. No suspects have been identified so far.
Birmingham Police say that the investigation is ongoing and will provide more updates as they become available. Anyone with information is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
