From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
Roy Moore’s defense team announced that it has filed a claim of defamation against Leigh Corfman, who accused Moore of initiating a sexual encounter with her when she was 14. The defense team also requested a trial by jury.
Corfman had previoulsly filed a claim against Moore.
Moore’s career has been mired in controversy, with the most recent being several women who have accused him of sexual assault or making sexual advances toward them when they were teenagers, claims that he continues to deny. The claims were made in 2017 when Moore ran for the U.S. Senate but lost to Democratic nominee Doug Jones.
Melissa Isaak, one of Moore’s defense attorneys, said that Corfman’s accusation is a political smear.
“This is and has been a political attempt to smear the good name and reputation of Judge Roy Moore, and we will not let this injustice continue,” she stated. “Yesterday, we filed claims for slander and defamation against Leigh Corfman, and claimed damages for attorney fees under the Alabama Litigation Accountability Act. We also continue to argue that this case should be tried in Etowah County, and wonder why Leigh Corfman has chosen to file this case in Montgomery and not Etowah County, where both she and Judge Moore reside and where her character and reputation are well known.”
